We are constantly up against the choice of using prescribed drugs that rarely cure the ailment and often only mask the symptoms for a period of time before the old condition returns.

I therefore make a point of keeping my eyes and ears open for all the effective herbal remedies that I can find and I’m presently using a guide to herbal remedies.

Click Here For Alternative Herbal Remedies

Since I’m already growing a herb garden and using the leaves for cooking and for their beautiful aromas, I’m now studying the medicinal uses of herbs also.

This is not a difficult step at all as many of the common herbs we already use in cooking can be used for homemade herbal remedies as well.

I have used a couple of herbs medicinally in the past, such as this simple one to prevent hair loss and treat dandruff:

Rosemary Hair Loss & Dandruff Home Remedy

Recipe

Half cup rosemary leaves
2 litres water

- Bring the rosemary leaves and water to a boil in a pot, simmer for 10-15 minutes, and leave to cool.
- Strain the tea into a container, preferably glass, and mix in a couple of drops of a good vegetable oil, like wheatgerm, olive or jojoba.

How To Use:

- Wash your hair lightly with a good shampoo, rinse and apply the rosemary mixture evenly throughout your hair
- Leave in for a couple of minutes, then wash your hair as usual

Use this herbal remedy daily for best results

Homemade Remedies For Hair

So you see the safest and most effective cures and remedies are easily made from ingredients already in our gardens and homes.

Do you have an illness or disease and have already spent a lot of money on pharmaceutical drugs that don’t work? Not to go into the many dangerous side-effects most of them can cause.

This is why I like Helen Anderson’s book: Herbs, The Natural Alternative, where you can find out which herbal remedies are the best and most effective for which ailments.

In her book she gives practical, no nonsense advice as well as full instructions for proven herbal cures for specific conditions.

In this book, Herbs, The Natural Alternative, you will learn:

Therapeutic uses of herbs. Discover how easy it is to use the same culinary herbs for their medicinal

Click Here For Herbs The Natural Alternative

qualities.

Find out exactly what you need in your herbal arsenal and which herbs and oils would be best for you and your family

Save a ton of money by making your own herbal infusions, instead of buying essential oils from the pharmacy. For example, one customer of the book thought the recipe for “herbal mouthwash” was great. Her kids actually prefer it to the store brand!

Use the book as an invaluable resource for you and your family to refer to whenever needed

Herbal bath recipes

It is a wonderful feeling when you know how to control your own health with cheap, but effective natural herbal cures.

You can easily learn which herbs to use for your specific ailment, and how to make the herbal cure for it, and do it not only for yourself but for your family and others as well.

It is important to plan to grow your herb garden and not to plunge into it headlong, as herbs on the whole require certain soil, light and fertilizing conditions.

Without going into the specifics of container herb gardening, windowsill herb gardening, or kitchen herb gardening, we will basically go over the main points on how to start a herb garden.

PLANNING

First, start by considering your available location and space for starting your herb garden and for its layout. Big or small? Maybe if this is your first time, start small, as to handle the project comfortably! In both cases you need to think of the following:

Uses. Do you want to grow your own herbs for culinary use, their aromatic properties, display or cut flowers, attracting the bees and bird, or any other reasons?

Depending on your choice, it would be useful to choose the specific herbs that you like to cook with for example. In

How To Grow Herbs

the kitchen some of the herbs cooks generally prefer are mint, basil, rosemary, oregano, thyme, dill, chives and tarragon. Lemon balm and lavender can be enjoyed for their beauty and beautiful scents outside and inside the home.

It is an amazing pleasure to pick your own fresh herbs for a specific purpose, but do try and grow ones you don’t know as well, to further discover the wonderful world of herbs.

CONDITIONS

The first requirement for successful herb growing is a location with adequate sunlight. The majority of herb plants need at least 4 – 6 hours of direct sunlight. A couple of herbs like mint, lemon balm and chervil like some shade to grow well.

Your herb garden site need to have good drainage as herb plants don’t like to be waterlogged. So in the case of clay soils you can add coarse sand and rough compost, or in the case of sandy soil, add organic matter.

When starting an herb garden you’ll want to be sure that the soil Ph factor is between 6.5 and 7.5. If you’re not sure what it is, you can determine that easily with a soil test. If the soil test result falls outside those two parameters you can correct the soil by adding either lime or sulfur to the soil.

Proper preparation of the soil is important: weeding and removal of foreign plants, loosening the soil to at least a foot deep, adding compost and manure.

Fertilizing the soil of your herb garden is important, but never overdo it as it will affect the taste and fragrance of your herbs. Best to use natural fertilizers such as liquid seaweed, and fish and bonemeal.

PLANTING

Herbs can be grown from planting seeds, propagated from plant cuttings or buying the small plants from your local nursery. Be sure to protect young herb plants from severe cold and frost.

Now that you have decided on the specific herbs that you would like to grow, consider their adult size so you can leave adequate space around them for vigorous growth. Other considerations include are where to plants with special care, whether the plan is an annual or perennial, and if you prefer a herb plant close to the kitchen.

It is worth it to have done this research as you’ll know where to plant taller herbs like dill which may grow upt to three feet tall and might need staking, or lemon balm and mint that might have to be shaded during the hot months.

Mulching around your new herb plants is a good practice to keep your herb garden neat, prevent water evaporation and stop weeds from growing.

These are some ideas on how to make a herb garden. If you want more info check out the other articles on this site.

Starting an herb garden will enable you to enjoy your own healthy, fresh, beautiful home-grown herbs, and you’ll make a green contribution to the environment!

Container Herb Garden

wondering how to start growing your own herbs for cooking as well.

One of the easiest ways is to start with container herb gardening.

If you’re starting out as a first time herb gardener, or you simply don’t have much gardening space, or you just want to make it super easy for yourself, then having a potted herb garden will be just the way to go.

These days you don’t even have to think about it too much as there are many prepared herb garden kits with seeds and

planters available so you can get going easily and quickly. The sooner you get your container herb garden going, the sooner can you pick your favorite herb, so get busy!

See Herb Container Gardening Possibilities Here

If you enjoy more of a gardening process, then you need suitable containers, seeds or seedlings and the right mix of potting soil to start with.

Going further along the herb propagation route, you may even want to start new plants from shoots, i.e. cut off pieces of the herb stems and plant them in a good mix of soil and compost. Better still, first dip the point of the stem in a hormone rooting powder to enhance your success of it growing roots.

Grow Basil in Container

One important aspect of growing herbs in containers is to ensure that the material the pot or container is made of is safe, e.g. that it doesn’t contain lead in its composition or that the paint on it doesn’t lead toxic substances. Terracotta and plastic pots in general are safe to use.

The location of your herb garden is of importance as most herbs prefer a sunny, dry spot to thrive. Even so, there are a number of very popular herbs that prefer less sunlight and more humid growing conditions.

Before we mention some specific herbs, it’s always advisable to grow the ones that you personally like. To this end, make a list of the ones you particularly enjoy to eat or even just smell and take note of the specific growing conditions of each one.

This is why container herb gardens are so much easier to handle, as you can just move the pot into the ideal situation for each herb plant – either indoors on a sunny windowsill, balcony or patio, or outside in the garden.

See Herb Container Gardening Possibilities Here

Generally, you want to put the following herbs in a sunny location with lots of sun most of the day:

Basil, Chives, Sage, Oregano, Rosemary, Thyme, Dill, and Tarragon

These herbs prefer more shade:

Mint and Lemon Balm

We’ll skip the part where your herbs have grown beautifully and you’re in full swing enjoying fresh herbs on a daily basis in delicious, fresh salads, fragrant soups and pasta dished, not to mention adding flavor to your meat dishes.

Just to end off by saying that when winter arrives it is easy to move your herbs in their containers indoors or to more protected areas. And if you have sufficient sunny windowsills or corners you can continue growing herbs throughout winter.

Another option is to pick the last of the summer growth and dry or freeze them for winter use.

Enjoy your container herb garden!

If you want to know how to grow herbs you are in for a fascinating experience!

The many uses of herbs to flavor cooking and cure ailments have been around for ages. Some people even believe that herbs possess magical powers which, I think, came about because of their delicious, fresh scents and real healing properties.

When you consider growing a herb garden you want to decide on a couple of things beforehand, for example:

* Choose the herbs that you want to plant, which might be difficult at first given the big range of possibilities. But for an easy start you can plant the ones you already use in your cooking or love having in your garden.

Some of the popular ones to start off with when you grow your own herb garden are: parsley, basil, mint, rosemary, sage, chive and dill.

*Space needed in your garden. Some herb plants require more space than others. Make sure you leave sufficient room for the plants to grow, and for a better display plant the tall herbs at the back to frame the smaller ones in the front.

See How To Grow Herbs Easily Here

You could also grow your herb garden in pots outside which adds interesting touches, and can be advantageous as some of them, like the mint family, have quite a spreading root system. The variety of containers available caters to any and every taste. There are also large, attractive pots that will accommodate three or more different types of herb plants in one pot.

Herb garden design. It is fun to plan your herb garden on paper first. There are many traditional and intricate herb garden designs available in books, but you could start with a simple square herb bed, divided into four parts by two paths crossing at the center point. Or a circular bed divided like a wagon wheel with a central point and spikes to separate different types of herbs.

Plan around annuals, biennials and perennials. It is better to separate the annuals from the perennials, so that you do not disturb the root system of the latter. Perennials will do well around the border or edge of the garden where they will be undisturbed.

Herb plants can be grown from seed, seedlings or if you are in a hurry from established plants. Growing from seed is the cheapest, but will need constant care and take longer to grow into a mature plant. However, if you want to enjoy the full herb growing process from start till use and enjoyment of your own fresh home grown herbs and have patience, you will find it a lot of fun and rewarding as well.

There are variations in the needs of different herb plants but they generally need alkaline soil and very good drainage. Herb plants won’t thrive when they have ‘wet feet’. To ensure optimum drainage you just need to have a sandy or rocky layer at the bottom of the pot or hole where the herb is planted.

// ]]>

Of course, not to forget enough sunlight and water and you are bound to enjoy a good harvest.

I hope that these pointers on how to grow herbs will help you establish the herb garden that you can enjoy for their beautiful, healing scents and powers, or simply pick a fresh sprig whenever you want!

To start a windowsill herb garden you only need small containers, preferably clay pots, potting soil, and seeds or seedlings. These components can be bought separately or as part of a herb garden kit. You simply need to fill the containers with potting soil, plant the seeds, or seedlings, of your choice, according to the directions on the packets or inserts. You may mix and match different types of herbs together or grow them individually each in its own pot.

The herbs that are especially suitable for windowsill herb gardening, because of their size, delicious flavors and ease of growing, include the following:

Oregano, which is best placed in a south-facing window.

Rosemary, also likes south-facing light exposure, and is good to have around for its fungus repellent nature .

Basil, different varieties. Basil likes a lot of sun and warm temperatures.

Thyme, different varieties. Thyme also prefers lots of sun but will grow well enough in less sunny spots.

Parsley is another sun loving herb, but will grow slower in other spots.

Sage also grows well indoors when put on a sunny south-facing window sill.

Mint, needs lots of light, warmth and watering, but not to the point of over watering.

If you want to explore further you could also grow Aloe Vera in your windowsill herb garden.

Most herbs like exposure to sunlight but if the room or windowsill has bright light it might prove sufficient. Watch the plants and move them around if they are not flourishing. Serious indoor gardeners use special artificial lighting in case of inadequate light, which is kept on for most part of the day.

Use good potting soil to plant your herb seedlings or plants in. The soil does not need to be very rich but drainage is the key to healthy herb plants, so make sure that the soil has the ability to drain off too much water to avoid plant diseases like root rot.

As to watering of your windowsill herb garden, you will have to balance your particular weather conditions, by playing with the water, temperature and light ratios. Generally most herb plants will do well when watered around once a week or when the soil around the plant is dry to the touch. Of course, during extreme hot temperatures you will have to water them more often.

Organic fertilizers are preferred over commercial ones as the latter will affect the taste and flavor of herbs – not to mention that they are unhealthy and environmentally unfriendly.

With regular pruning, harvesting and care your windowsill herb garden will flourish and be worth all the care you have given them. Your potted herb plants can be enjoyed at home as a fresh table centerpiece decoration or given away as a much appreciated and useful gift.

It is so simple getting started with this system of container herb gardening. You just moisten the growing sponges thoroughly and place one in each pot. You then choose one variety of seed per pot and sprinkle the seeds on the surface of the growing sponge.

The last step involves frequent watering and you could see the seeds sprout pretty quickly, sometimes even in only four days’ time – amazing! Be careful not to keep the growing sponges soaking wet, only maintain the terra cotta pots fairly humid. An easy way to do this is to cover just the top of the pot with plastic.

Your chia herb garden can be placed indoor or outdoors, and you may also transplant your herb plants directly into the soil if you wish. Many herb gardeners enjoy tending to their potted herb plants inside their homes on a sunny windowsill or warm spot, and having the plants near by also makes it easy to pinch off some leaves needed for that special tasty dish.

It is fun to see your newly sown seeds germinate and sprout their first leaves. But if you want to skip even the setting up and the sowing process of a chia herb garden, you can just buy one already growing. This enables you to benefit from an attractive edible and medicinal herb garden immediately – if you don’t forget to water the herb plants!

The chia herb pots can be attractively arranged as you wish in many spots, be it your kitchen windowsill, a sunny patio, or a garden wall. As the pots are small they are easily transportable to a new spot and re-arranged in a new display at any time. And if you ever want to transplant the herb plants elsewhere, just remove the plant and sponge as is and plant it in the new location – very easy!

You will be happy to discover that it is easier to grow than you think. There are just a couple of steps to take and some tips to keep in mind to get you on your way to growing your own delightful culinary herb garden.

To start your cooking herb garden, decide whether it is going to be an outside one, a patio or a kitchen window sill one. The important thing is for you to have easy, close access to your herb plants from your kitchen.

The next important factor is that your herb plants need a number of hours of bright daylight for them to prosper and bear abundant foliage and flowers. In caring for your herbs you also have to consider tips on watering and temperature. Herb plants need adequate watering, but take care not to over water them as they could fall prey to diseases like root rot and powdery mildew. As for temperature, herb plants overall do not grow well in extreme hot or cold temperatures. Care should therefore be taken to shield them adequately under those conditions. You can find more information on indoor herb gardening here.

A kitchen herb garden has a multitude of benefits and can be grown for its culinary, aromatic or curative powers. Many times we might use specific herbs in cooking without being aware of their additional beneficial properties. Before refrigerators, many herbs like marjoram, thyme, bay and rosemary were a necessary ingredient in preserving food. Now we are learning about their health-preserving properties as well. Once you become interested in these amazing plants, your herb discovery journey has started!

Here comes the exciting part: you have to decide which herbs you want to grow! Of course the culinary herbs come to mind first when speaking about a kitchen herb garden. But, I’m sure, you would want to grow all your favorite herbs and enjoy their easy availability and fresh, full flavor.

As everyone has different favorites, I will provide some information on a couple of generally popular and versatile herbs you may consider for your kitchen herb garden.

1. Basil
At the start of spring you can easily find basil seedlings at any nursery, and even at the local supermarket. If you want to start from seed, it would be preferable to sow them in early spring in a greenhouse or a warm spot, and during springtime directly in the garden.

Basil is one of the most well-known herbs and adds a warm and spicy flavor to pasta and soup dishes, omelets, salads and sauces, especially the green, tasty Italian pesto sauce. It goes especially well with tomatoes , enhances any meat, poultry or fish dish, and adds medicinal properties when added to vinegar. Basil strengthens the heart and digestive system.

There are other varieties of basil as well, like the African blue basil and cinnamon basil which can be used as a fragrant herb. Go here for more interesting info on growing basil.

2. Mint
Having your own mint is essential, whether you like it in a mint sauce to accompany a lamb dish, brew into a soothing, hot tea or add a fresh taste to a cool drink on a hot summer afternoon. Mint sauce or mint jelly is also made from spearmint.

Mint can be propagated from pieces of the root of the plant. They are good growers when watered well, but you need to contain the roots as they easily invade the root system of neighboring plants.

3. Parsley
Many people think of parsley only as a beautiful, green, curly-leaved garnish on hotel aperitif, party food platters and meat or fish dishes. But apart from its appealing decorative value, parsley adds taste to soups, casseroles, omelets and salads.

Parsley can be grown from seed in the springtime, but soak the seeds overnight before sowing, and be sure to thin out the seedlings to about 10 inches of space in between them.

4. Sage
Sage is an an important ingredient in pork sausages, and enhances the flavor of lamb, cheese and omelet dishes. It is also traditionally added to chicken and turkey stuffing.

Sage can also be grown from seed or seedlings in springtime. The plants need about one foot of distance from one another to grow well.

So here you have an excellent list for a basic kitchen herb garden. There are many other popular culinary herbs including chives, origano, thyme, savory, marjoram and rosemary, but it will be interesting to take a look at them on another page. Until then, happy cooking!

Basil is one of the most popular culinary herbs to be found in many kitchens. If it is a particular favorite herb of yours, you will benefit greatly from growing basil in your garden or on your kitchen window sill. A couple of plants will be sufficient to supply you with enough leaves to add delicious flavoring to sauces and savory dishes.

The warm, aromatic, spicy flavor of basil, and the deep green color, complements many dishes, but particularly, tomatoes extremely well. It can be served fresh in salads or added to a rich tomato sauce for pasta and sausages.

If you like Italian food, for example, you definitely know the savory pesto sauce which is often served with pasta. Pesto is made by grinding the following ingredients together: basil, pine kernels, parmesan cheese, olive oil and garlic to make the well-known thick, flavorsome, green sauce.

Start Growing Basil At Home

When cooking with basil it is important to remember that, even though basil has such a distinctive taste, long cooking periods weakens it. To prevent this from happening be sure to add the basil only towards the end of the cooking process. Stronger flavored herbs may overpower the taste of basil, but rosemary and oregano complement it.

Growing basil is easy in a warm climate and a sunny, sheltered spot. Ideally you want it close to your kitchen so growing basil in a pot close by or on your patio or terrace would enable you to pick some leaves whenever needed. The basil plant needs to be watered often and its soil needs to dry out between watering.

The basil plant grows well in a container in well-drained and fertilized soil. As it is an annual plant, you may move it indoors to a warm, sunny spot when the first signs of autumn and the cold comes and prolong its life somewhat. Afterwards, you may make new sowings from seeds, or seedlings, in pots indoors for a permanent supply of this useful herb.

Basil needs to be pruned regularly, but if you harvest it constantly by picking the top, new leaves you will encourage a more vigorous, sideways growth. If it isn’t pruned, the basil plant will grow into a tall, thin plant with few leaves. A healthy basil plant can grow up to two feet or more.

Sweet basil, or the Genovese type, is the most widely grown variety for its distinctive, authentic flavor. Purple basil is not commonly known but makes a flavorful vinegar and is used in Asian cooking. In summer the plant bears fragrant white or lavender flowers that has a smell of cinnamon, lemon or anise depending on the variety of basil. In India, where it is made into a tea, the medicinal properties of basil tulsi is highly regarded to the extent that it is termed ‘holy’ basil.

Even though basil is not high on the list of medicinal herbs, it is said to aid conditions such as: digestion, flatulence, headaches, anxiety, vomiting and cramps, memory improvement, helps to fight colds, reduces cholesterol and has antiseptic qualities.

Preserving basil can be less than satisfactory as the fresh form is considered the best. If you have an abundance of fresh leaves and you would like to dry them, you would be advised to dry them the old-fashioned way by pressing the leaves between layers of paper towels inside heavy books for a couple of weeks. This method is preferred over slow drying the leaves in a cool oven.

Another good method of storing basil is to puree the leaves and freezing the puree in ice cubes. The frozen basil cubes can then be dropped straight into your cooking pot. And the last method of storing basil simply involves harvesting the whole stem of the plant with the leaves on, placing the stems in a glass of water, covering them with a plastic bag and then refrigerating them. This way you can use the leaves for quite a while.

I hope the above information has given you some ideas and incentives for growing basil for your own use and enjoyment.

Indoor herb gardening is an easy and rewarding way to enjoy fresh herbs for cooking, their fragrances and their visual delights, not to mention the fact that you will be refreshing the quality of the air inside your house.

Herbs in pots brighten any room, and a family member need only touch the leaves of the herbs for them to release their fragrant essential oils. Fresh herbs like marjoram, mint, or chives make mealtimes special, so whenever a pot is boiling on the stove it is easy to lean over and pick a few sprigs of your favorite herb to spice up your soup.

Growing herb indoors makes it possible for you to enjoy the freshest of herbs each and every day. It is a fun hobby to work in and is an easy garden to maintain. You can have as many potted herbs indoors as sunny windowsills and other spaces allow. If you follow a couple of steps your indoor herb gardening will be successful. The only quality required is a passion for herbs and some knowledge, as beginners can start with a very limited investment.

More Indoor Herb Growing Ideas

You can micro-manage herb plants very well when they are right on your windowsill. When growing herbs indoors instead of outside, you are in control of the three most important requirements: light, temperature and moisture.

Adequate sunlight or light
It is necessary to expose all herbs to 4 to 6 hours of sunlight a day on your window sill or chosen spot. If your window doesn’t allow in that much light, you can purchase special garden grow lights and hang them three inches above the plants. Some signs that your herb garden is not receiving enough light will be long stems and leaves, fading leaves or simply leaves that fall off for no other reason.

Watering
How often do you need to water your indoor herbs? That’s an important question. Herbs grown in containers do tend to dry out more quickly than those grown outside. But it’s very easy to check that. Simply stick a finger into the soil at least half an inch below the surface. If the soil feels dry to the touch, then you’ll need to water the plant. However, don’t be tempted to over water your indoor herbs as you’ll only be promoting root rot as well as the development of a disease called powdery mildew.

Additionally, during the winter months the air inside might be too dry for your herb plants. A quick remedy is to use a fine mist water spray and spray the herbs all over once a week. Another method is to place the herb in its container onto a tray filled with pebbles with water poured over the pebbles. As the water in the tray evaporates, it humidifies the air around the plant.

Temperature
As far as temperature goes, it is essential to shield herbs from extreme temperatures. For example, if you live in a very hot climate shade the herbs during the hottest periods, and if you live in a very cold climate keep the herbs away from cold glass panes.

Which herbs to grow indoors?
Growing herbs indoors proves to be highly beneficial when you grow the herbs that have multiple uses. Following are some of the most popular herbs for indoor herb gardening:

Sage is a versatile herb for a kitchen herb garden. It is a commonly used herb in savory meat or poultry dishes, and is also used medicinally, as a tea for sore throats and colds.

Chives are a must have for a kitchen herb garden as they can be eaten at almost every meal. Chives are easy to grow, you just need to cut them back often, to keep from toppling over.

Thyme is another powerful cooking and healing herb. The more you trim the thyme leaves, the more tasty leaves you will be rewarded with. Thyme is great for both savory dishes and in a tea for colds and flu.

Sweet Marjoram is a delicious herb that can be used in most dishes, and also in the place of oregano.

Parsley is an often underestimated herb through its primary use as a food garnish due to its attractive deep green color and decorative curly leaves. Parsley is also a potent antioxidant that prevents damage to cells, and contains Vitamin A and C, amongst many nutrients. It is also highly effective as a breath and palate cleanser.

French Tarragon lends itself well to any dairy or egg dish and gives a savory taste to those winter comfort foods

And finally, for a lovely container filled with fragrant herbs, you could consider Rose Scented Geranium and Lemon Balm. As the name implies the Rose Scented Geranium has a delicious rose fragrance, but there are more scents to choose from, such as a variety of Citrus Scented Geraniums (which is a known mosquito repellent) or the Peppermint Scented Geranium. Apart from its fresh smell, Lemon Balm also reduces stress and anxiety, promotes sleep, improves appetite, and eases pain and discomfort associated with digestion.

Now the only thing left to do is watch, enjoy and allow time for your indoor herbs to grow used to their new conditions. Once you see growth you can start using you herbs. Cut and use your herbs often to encourage them to grow full and lush.
